Chatham Middle School is organized into what it calls a "house plan." Each grade level is divided into three groups…More of students and three teaching teams. The school does this, it says, in order to allow for interdisciplinary approaches, team teaching and common planning time.
The intention, in part, is to allow students to participate in lots of different academic activities so they have a better idea of their interests going forward into high school and beyond. The team teaching is also intended to create a small, intimate atmosphere within the classroom.
Other than that, the school offers lots of extracurricular activities and clubs for its students.
The Kiwanis Club of the Chathams was launched in 1930 and today counts about 62 people as members.
The club is…More involved with a variety of community service projects. It raises money for the elimination of iodine deficiency disorder and sponsors a host of local school clubs, such as the ECLC of New Jersey Key Club and the Chatham Middle School Builder's Club. It develops and maintains Stanley Park, and sponsors Chatham's Fourth of July parade and Library of the Chathams Children's Picnic.
To fundraise, the club recycles waste newspapers, hosts various dinners throughout the year and sells nuts during the holiday season.
The club meets the first two Tuesdays of each month at 12:10 p.m. (members are asked to arrive by noon) at Brooklake Country Club, 139 Brooklake Road, Florham Park, and the last two or three Tuesdays of each month at 8 a.m. (members are asked to arrive by 7:45 a.m.) at Charlie Brown's Restaurant, 522 Southern Blvd., Chatham.
