I find it disingenuous that Patch authors like Ms. Crawford write articles like this containing aRead More complete lack of specifics so that this article can be re-posted to a thousand Patch sites and you can feel like she is writing it in--and about--your town. Don't you think it depends on whether you live in Brooklyn, NY, or Chatham, NJ, or Framingham, MA, or Maple Grove, MN? Ms. Crawford lives in Brooklyn. If she told you that, you would think she's nuts to let her 8 year old play across the street in a big Brooklyn park without a parent nearby. Rightfully so. It is not just about crime stats. It is also about society's current perception of when it is age appropriate to let your child be un-parented in a large urban park. With regard to your headline, I think maybe you are confusing intelligent, involved, caring parents with overprotective ones.

Amen, Duncan! All I needed to read was the headline to know who the author was. Ms. Crawford isRead More also the one who tells us that the "knockout game" is an urban myth and we should be very skeptical of anyone who tells us differently. Just trying to make us feel good (and maybe keep us ignorant about whats really going on all around us) or maybe she has another agenda? Whatever could it be? She has admitted to keeping her own child within reach (I guess us "helicopter parents" arent that looney, huh?) but she thinks maybe we're being too overprotective with ours? I guess we should send OUR kids out alone...my kid can be the ginea pig - test out those crime rates! Sending 8 and 11 year old girls out to play in a park, in Brooklyn is a pedophiles dream come true...oh, wait...those types dont really prey on young girls - urban myth!

...ah, the Dailybeast! Ms. Crawford, stop trying to infect us with your liberal disease! We knowRead More the patch is owned by AOLooney (and that its losing money hand over fist just like most liberal rags/radio/news) so you feel free to regurgitate your abominable adenda here. It is not welcome.
