Christie also addresses video parody with Newark mayor during his East Hanover meeting.
The focus Wednesday of Gov. Chris Christie's 79th Town Hall meeting was the governor's proposed 10 percent, across-the-board tax cuts. Christie, speaking at the East Hanover Fire Department, said he's determined to deliver the tax break New Jersey residents have been waiting for. “The people of New Jersey haven’t had a tax cut in over a decade," he said. "You’ve made the sacrifices that were necessary to step up and help me balance this budget, and I want to give you some of your money back to spend on your family, not to spend in Trenton." Christie looks to accomplish this despite some opposition across county lines. According to Christie, two of those opposing the proposal in particular—Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) …
J. Michael Adams has been on medical leave since October.
Fairleigh Dickinson University President J. Michael Adams announced Wednesday he would step down in June after ongoing medical issues have made it impossible for him to lead the school. Adams, 64, has been on medical leave since October while undergoing treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome, which impacts bone marrow and impairs blood production. In a message to the university, Adams said he was later diagnosed with a cancer known as acute myeloid leukemia. “Since I was named president 13 years ago, I have done everything I could to serve our amazing students. The opportunity to work with all of you has been the greatest joy of my professional life. However, I have reluctantly concluded that my continuing medical issues make it impossible…
Prank your neighbors and help raise money for teens from St. Patrick and St. Vincent Martyr to build homes in the Appalachians.
When Barbara Murphy heard "a commotion" on her front lawn Monday night, she thought college students home for the summer were having some fun. It was not until her daughter Colleen came home later that she learned her front yard had some new occupants. "Colleen came in that night, and she could barely speak, she was laughing so hard," Murphy said. The commotion came from members of local youth ministries who set up about a dozen garden gnomes in Murphy's yard. JoAnne Babbitt, who woke up to the gnomes in her yard Saturday morning, donated money to send the gnomes to Murphy. The gnomes raise money for the Appalachia Outreach Program for youth ministry teens from St. Patrick Church in Chatham Borough and St. Vincent Martyr Church in Madison…

Mayor and governor have fun with their images
Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…
Interim Superintendent says school is "in good hands."
Dennis Fyffe, the interim superintendent for the School District of the Chathams, said parents have been properly notified of a case of whooping cough, or pertussis, at Washington Avenue School (WAS). A letter sent home to parents said there was one confirmed case and one suspected case of whooping cough at WAS. No other cases have been reported in any other district schools, Fyffe said, but there have been other cases in Chatham residents who do not attend public schools and in other towns in Morris County. "Children who have been vaccinated are generally at low risk, but some children who have been vaccinated have still contracted pertussis," Fyffe's letter reads in part. Fyffe said WAS principal Mary Quigley has been collaborating and …
The college sophomore finished the 2012 season among the team's top 10 scorers.
Muhlenbrg College sophomore Casey Gill distinguished himself on his college 2012 mens lacrosse team. According to Andrew Wible, the assistant sports information director at Muhlenberg, Gill "set career highs with three goals and 4 points," which put him among the team's top 10 scorers. Gill, a 2010 graduate of Chatham High School, was one of two on the lacrosse team to score multiple points against Gettysburg College, a nationally-ranked team. Muhlenberg finished the season 2-12, "including six losses by three goals or less," Wible said. Nine of their opponents played in the postseason, including Montclair State University, which won their conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Montclair State was one of the two …
