5 Things to Do in the Region

Oktoberfest, Washington Twp.'s big anniversary, makeovers for job seekers and the Blues Brothers Revue offer much to do this weekend.

Looking for something to do by yourself, or with friends and family this weekend? Here's what The Weekender has in store for the area.

  1. To celebrate the 275th anniversary of the area’s first settlers, the Washington Township Historic Society presents a book signing of the latest in Arcadia Books’ “Images of America” series by Betsy Guzenski and Charlotte and Juergen Arndt. The society contributed to the writing of the book, and on Sunday the authors will be at the Washington Township Historical Society Museum Sunday from 2-4 p.m., when copies of the book will be available for sale. (In case, you miss it, another booksigning is scheduled for Oct. 19 from 1-3 p.m. at the Washington Township Library). The museum is at 6 Fairview Ave. in Long Valley.
  2. If you're seeking a new job, looking good is key. Get some help on the physical aesthetics front at the Butler Public Library's Makeovers for Interviews Program Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Lynn Anne Cutler, Mary Kay beauty consultant, will facilitate the free event and assist you in making your first impression count.  Participants will receive product samples to take home, and the opportunity for a follow-up consultation with Cutler. The program is limited to 10 participants, so call 973-838-3262, or stop by the library at 1 Ace Road in Butler to pre-register. 
  3. Bloomington Borough is the site of the Bob Kochka 5K to raise funds for a local firefighter suffering from stage four pancreatic cancer. Proceeds from the 5K will also benefit the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. The event will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Walter T. Bergen School, 225 Glenwild Ave., and will end at DeLazier Field, between Chestnut and Ballston streets. Bloomingdale Pride Day will follow the run. For more information, or to register, click here.
  4. They're on a mission from God: The members of the Official Blues Brothers Revue is coming to William Paterson University. Featuring Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood, this exuberant concert showcases the humor, music and mayhem of the classic 1980 John Belushi-Dan Aykroyd film. The show takes place at the university's Shea Center for Performing Arts Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $25-$35; purchase them at Shea's online box office.
  5. The 15th annual Chester Lions Club Oktoberfest is set to overtake Chubb Park on Route 24 in Chester this weekend. From noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the event presents traditional music, native dress and a special Oktoberfest beer, authentic German food and fun activities such as pony rides and rock climbing. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
