Couple Carjacked at Gunpoint, Borough Police Say

A man and woman driving along Watchung Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday were carjacked at gunpoint, Chatham Borough police said.

Steep Slope Law Passes Over Committeewoman's Objections

Chatham Township Committee Member Kathy Abbott did not get any support for her motion to amend a proposed steep slope ordinance Thursday.

Abbott wished to remove a paragraph from the ordinance which allowed single family residences on lots of 25,000 square feet or less to be exempt from disturbances to slopes on their properties.

"That's most single family homes," Abbott said. "You are affecting the way the whole neighborhood looks," and potentially how neighbors are affected by things such as water runoff.

N.Y. Ranger Callahan to Come to Legends Gallery

Legends Gallery in Chatham Borough will host New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan on Wednesday, July 24.

Callahan will give autographs to those with tickets between 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $100, with $85 and $100 tickets including items such as pucks, flats and jerseys for Callahan to sign.

Neighbors Incensed as Washington School Trees Come Down

Residents near Washington Avenue School had their Monday morning interrupted by the surprising sound of chainsaws at work bringing down nine trees in front of the school.Brian Becker, a resident of Orchard Street, said he came outside and spoke to the men taking down the trees. "They said they're putting in a parking lot," Becker said. "I called the school administrator, and he said it was a line item in the budget."

Chatham Girls on Cutting Edge of New Science

For some students, summer is the chance to relax and live the lazy, luxurious life. For 11 Chatham girls, it's the opportunity to keep learning.

Several parents and teachers from the Chatham community collaborated to offer courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to middle school girls.
