Weekend Roundup: Boys' Tennis Wins Newark Academy Tournament, Track Team Competes in County Relays

Teams will face stiff competition this week.

The boys' tennis team won the Newark Academy Tournament this weekend, defeating the host school in the tournament's finals by a score of 3-2.

The team had earlier beaten Westfield in the semifinals by the same score. Chatham's singles starts Quentin Monaghan, Patrick Monaghan and Matt Romei each won their matches to secure Chatham's victory against both Westfield and Newark Academy.

The Cougars improved to 20-1, and will face Westfield today in regular season play if the matches are not canceled by rain.

The Morris County Relays were also held this weekend at Morris Knolls High School, and Chatham athletes competed throughout the meet.

The boys' 4 x 1600 team of Anthony Malatesta, Stephen Leonard, Corey Black and Jack Beecher placed third with a time of 18:37, improving its time from last week by five seconds.

The boys' discus team of Eric Drury, Dennis Murphy and Jake Neumann took sixth, and Neumann again broke the school record, tossing the disc 164 feet, two inches. His throw was the best of the competition.

The girls' 4 x 1600 team of Tara Hanley, Kathleen Lavelle, Tara Malanga and Kat Grimes also fared well, posting a fifth place finish.

In the distance medley relay, the team of Kathleen Lavelle, Sarah Wang, Julie Williamson and Kat Grimes placed second, helping Chatham score big points.

The girls finished 14th at the meet, while the boys finished 16th. Full results are posted here.

The teams will compete in the NJAC Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.
