'This is the Year' for Chatham Boys Track Team

The Cougars look to win their conference in 2011.

After coming in second in their conference in 2010, the Chatham boys varsity track team hopes to surpass their record and take first place in their conference in 2011.

With over 70 hard working athletes putting together the Chatham boys track team, Head Coach Pat Barry looks to the 2011 spring track season with anticipatory delight.

Last Season's Results

The Cougars went 5-1-1 in dual meets last season and finished second to Hanover Park in the North Jersey Athletic Conference.

Keep Your Eye On

  • Stephen Bangs, Hurdles (Sr.) — As a junior Bangs’ strongest event was the 110 meter hurdles, which he placed seventh in the Group II Section II Championship meet.
  • Andrew Mudgett, Hurdles (Sr.) — In 2010 Mudgett lead the Cougars in the 400 meter hurdles.
  • Jake Neumann, Throws (Sr.) — Neumann lead the Chatham throwers by example. Neumann was a state sectional champion in the discus which lead to his future accolades. In 2010, Neumann placed second overall in Group II to punch his ticket to the Meet of Champions, where he placed fifth overall.
  • Eric Drury, Throws (Sr.) — Drury makes the Chatham throws a force to be reckoned with also excelling in discus. Drury place third — two behind Neumann in the Group II, Section 2 discus throw.
  • David Tobia, Sprints and Jumps (Sr.) — Tobia leads the Cougars in the 100 meter dash and the long jump.
  • Lachan Davis, Sprints (Sr.) — As a junior Davis lead the Cougars in the 400M run.
  • Charlie Baker, Distance (Sr.) — Part of the distance leadership Baker was also a captain in the Winter Track season
  • Charlie Zachariades, Hurdles (Jr.) — With Bangs, Zachariades put the Chatham hurdlers on the map in 2010.
  • Anthony Malatesta, Distance (Jr.) — In the 2010 spring season Malatesta placed sixth overall in the 1600 meter run at the Group II Section II championship meet. More impressively for the past winter season Malatesta was named to all county honors in the 3200 meter run. Additionally, Malatesta was an indoor track North II Group II State Champion in the 3200 meter run.
  • Corey Black, Distance (Jr.) — This past indoor track season Black placed third overall in the 800M run at the North II Group II Championship meet.

They'll Miss

  • Stephen Leonard, Distance—Leonard was a distance leader on the team and punched his ticket to the Group II championships by placing fourth in the 3200 meter run at the Group II, Section 2 championship meet. Leonard now attends Stonehill College where he is a member of the Skyhawks Track and Field Team.
  • Jack Beecher, Distance—With Leonard, Beecher helped lead the distance runners in 2010. A one-two punch Beecher placed second in the 3200 meter run at the Group II, Section 2 championship meet. Beecher is currently enrolled at George Washington University where there is no collegiate Track and Field program.

  • “We are a well balanced team and if we are going to win the conference, this will be the year to do it,” said Barry.

  • “We have a lot of success that will come from hard work. We don’t have any one person who will blow anyone out of the water—everyone is good because they work hard,” said senior captain Charlie Baker.
