Photos: After Chatham Softball Seniors are Honored, a Decisive Victory

Alex St. Romain and Caroline Murphy presented flowers to their parents before the game.

It was Senior Day for the Chatham softball team on Monday, and seniors Alex St. Romain and Caroline Murphy were honored before the Chatham softball team's game against St. Elizabeth at Chatham Middle School. But because of injury, neither of the two was able to start the game or play in the field.

So their teammates picked them up.

Amanda Fazio pitched two innings of no-hit ball, Emily Wolsch gave up one hit over the game's final three innings and the Cougars coasted to a 14-0 victory over St. Elizabeth in five innings.

Fazio also got two hits in the first inning, one of which cleared the bases. Many of the team's members who don't normally hit or play in the field got into the action, too, including Elke Luria, who went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI.

Murphy, who has an injured back, made the most of her opportunities during the game as well, even though she was unable to play her typical position of right field. In her one at-bat, she stroked a double that one-hopped the outfield fence.

St. Romain injured her hamstring in a game last week against Madison and her future status is up in the air.

With the win, Chatham clinched its division. It will face Hanover Park today at 4 p.m. at Chatham Middle School in the first round of the North Jersey Group II, Section II state tournament.
