Girls Track Looks to its Strength in Numbers

The team has a strong season ahead.

The weather is starting to warm up, and that means spring sports are about to start for Chatham High School varsity squads. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Cougars girls track team.

Overview

With a roster hovering around 100 athletes, the Chatham girl’s track team looks to its depth to better last season’s performance. First year Head Coach Julie Ullmeyer will look to a deep talent pool to train new team members for success.

Last Season's Results

The Cougars went 7-1 in dual meets last season and finished third at the North Jersey Athletic Conference Championship meet and Fourth at the Group 2, Section 2 Championship meet.

Keep Your Eye On

  • Katie Hurt, Sprints and Hurdles (Sr.) — Hurt earned her way to the Group 2 Championship meet by placing fifth in the 400 meter hurdles at the Group 2, Section 2 meet and fourth in the State Sectional meet.

  • Julie Williamson, Mid-Distance (Jr.) — Last year Williamson placed second in the 400 meter run and sixth in the 800 meter run at the NJAC Championship meet to help her team place third overall. She also placed sixth in the 400 meter run at the Group II, Section 2 meet and helped her team place fourth at the State Sectional meet. While on the winter track team this past season, Williamson had the ninth best overall time of all competitors in the 800 meter run.

  • Tara Hanley, Distance (Jr.) — As a sophomore Hanley placed third in the 3200 meter run and fifth in the 1600 meter run at the Group II, Section 2 championship meet. Hanley also placed sixth overall in the Morris County Championship meet in the 3200 meter run. Hanley was one of two Cougars to qualify for the 2010 Meet of Champions.

  • Eileen McHugh, Throws (Sr.) — A senior captain the Cougars will look to McHugh to guide the younger throwers on the team.

  • Kim Teschemacher, Jumps (Sr.) — In the 2010 season, Teschemacher just missed qualifying in the Long Jump at the Group II, Section 2 Championship with a jump of 14-00-.5.

  • Lauren Hagens, Jumps and Sprints (Sr.) — In the 2010 season, Hagens just missed qualifying in the High Jump at the Section II Group II Championship with a jump of 4’8”.

  • Lucy Wardley, Jumps (Sr.) — With Teschemacher, Wardley will look to lead younger team members in the long jump.

  • They'll Miss

    • Hali Deters, Thrower—The throwing leader of the 2010 team Deters placed second in Javelin and courth in Discus in the Group II, Section 2 championship meet to help her team place fourth overall.  Deters attends the University of North Carolina.

    • Kat Grimes, Distance—Storied as one of Chatham’s best distance runners in history, in 2010 Grimes broke the Chatham High School girls track records in the 1600M and 3200M run. Grimes placed first in the 800 meter, 1600 meter and 3200 meter run in the 2010 NJAC Championship and was a state champion in the 3200 meter run. She and Hanley were the sole Cougars in the 2010 Meet of Champions. Grimes attends Brown University where she is a contributing member of the track and field team.

    • Kathleen Lavelle, Distance—With Grimes, Lavelle helped to lead the younger distance team. Lavelle is currently attending the University of Virginia.

    • Sarah Wang, Sprinter—Part of the 2010 core senior leadership, Wang is currently enrolled at Dartmouth College.

    COACH'S TAKE

    • “I’m excited about my first season as head coach and I think that our team has a lot of depth that will carry us through the season,” said Coach Ullmeyer.

    • “We have a lot more girls this year than we usually do and we are all really excited,” said Lucy Wardley, Lauren Hagens, Katie Hurt, and Sarah Shannon. “It should be a great season!”
