Girls Cross Country Continues Season Undefeated

Boys and girls soccer, boys cross country celebrate victories

Chatham schools have the day off Thursday for Rosh Hashanah, but there are still some sports scores from to report this week.

On Tuesday:

The boys soccer team defeated Voorhees 3-1 in Chatham.

The girls volleyball team defeated Villa Walsh Academy 2-1. The set scores were 25-18 Chatham, 25-19 Villa Walsh and 25-17 Chatham.

The girls soccer team defeated The Academy of St. Elizabeth's 7-0. Lina Proska scored 3 goals and had 1 assist, in what Head Coach Chris Calveley called "a strong offensive performance." Emily Hoffman had 2 goals, and Kate Murphy and Jaclyn Leto scored one each. Other assists came from Natalie Washuta (2), Dana Pitonyak, McCall Moore, and Morgan Maltby.

The boys cross country underclassmen teams defeated Pequannock High at the Sussex County Fairgounds. The following seven runners swept the first seven positions:

  • Dominic Vernazza, grade 10
  • Parth Shah, grade 10
  • Andrew Vena, grade 10
  • JC Perrin, grade 10
  • Bobby Costanzo, grade 11
  • Tommy Whiteside
  • Carson Burns

In the freshman race, Will Mitchell raced to a first place finish against all teams from the Freeedom, Independence and Liberty Divisions. Mitchell ran the 3 kilometer course in 11:20.79.

The girls cross country team defeated The Academy of St. Elizabeth 16-44 Tuesday at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. They also defeated Pequannock, bringing their record to 5-0 on the season.

The varsity race was 4,850 meters. Chatham runners swept the first four places and finished in 5 out of the top 6 categories. The top five runners from Chatham were Tess Frenzel, Kayla Michell, Julie Williamson, Stacey Angelbeck and Tara Malanga.

The freshmen girls finished 1,2,6,7,8 in the combined division 1.8-mile freshmen race. The top 5 were Laura Walsh, Margot Cosgrove, Hannah Brogan, Regyn Farnan and Kat Schmitter.

All students interested in joining the fencing team are invited to meet with the coach at 2:40 p.m. in the cafeteria on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Fencing is a parent-funded winter sport for both boys and girls. Prior experience is not required.

The NJSIAA has posted the grouping for the general classification sports. Chatham again will be in North Section 2, Group 3.

The girls field hockey team was seeded No. 3 in the Morris County Tournament. The Cougars will host the winner of the Mt. Olive vs. Morristown-Beard game. It is anticipated that the game will be played on Thursday, Oct. 6 at .

The volleyball team will travel to Morris Knolls on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m.

The girls soccer team will host Boonton on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. at Haas Field.

The boys soccer team will host the winner of Parsippany Hills vs. Parsippany on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. at .

The next Athletic Booster Club meeting is on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Chatham High media center.
