Chatham Youth Soccer Team Captures Girls U9 Title

Team defeated previously unbeaten Sparta to win crown.

The following was submitted from the Chatham United Infinity girls soccer U9 team:

The Chatham United Infinity (7-1-2) captured the Girls U9 title in thrilling fashion this past Sunday.  The girls went into their last game of the spring season needing a win to secure first place. Their opponent, the Sparta Blue Flames, was undefeated until Sunday.

The Infinity, coached by Matt Blankley, first met Sparta at Lum Field earlier this season, where they ended up in a 1-1 tie despite the wide margin in shots on goal favoring the Infinity.  In a rough and tumble rematch, the girls held off an aggressive start by Sparta in the first half and dominated much of the action throughout the entire second half. With a powerful kick by Cameron McGlynn, the only goal of the game was scored.  Cameron drilled the ball from the right side of the box across to the left corner of the goal.

Goalies Mollie Ritter (1H) and Samantha Poillucci (2H) were stellar all game with countless game-saving stops.  The defense, anchored by Ali Dorrego, Sydney Puntus and Ella Jones continued their season-long dominance.   In fact, the Infinity ended the season allowing a mere 6 goals (best in flight) and the defense held their opponents scoreless in 6 of 10 games.

Center midfielders Clare Barrett and Ashley Kiernan ratcheted up the pressure on Sparta flying all over the field and re-directing the action down field. Right and left mid-fielders and Forwards, Meghan Hefflin, Jane Middleton, Cami McKenzie, CJ Williams and Remi Levato controlled the ball in Sparta's end of the field during the entire second half and kept their defense and goalie very busy before the winning goal (for a flight-leading total of 28 goals scored).
