Big Day, Weekend for Cougars Athletics

Three teams move on in states, while track teams begin competing at sectionals.

It was a big day for varsity athletics on Thursday.

The Cougars boys lacrosse team advanced in the Group 2 tournament with an easy victory. They play on Cougar Field at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Northern Highlands in the group semifinals, with the winner advancing to Wednesday's group finals at Ridge High School. The Cougars' likely opponent should they win on Saturday: two-time defending champion and undefeated Summit.

The Cougars girls lacrosse team also was victorious, defeating their Summit counterparts. The win gave the Cougars the North 2 sectional championship. They next play in the group finals against South 2 champion Rumson Fair-Haven on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Robbinsville High School.

The Cougars girls softball team moved on to the North 2, Group III sectional semifinals after defeating Somerville. The squad next travels to No. 2 seeded South Plainfield at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Cougars boys and girls track teams compete Friday and Saturday in the sectional championships at South Plainfield High School. Friday's competition starts at 4 p.m. and Saturday's at 10 a.m.

In other action:
The softball team plays a regular season game on Saturday, traveling to Morris Catholic to take on the Crusaders at 10 a.m.
