Washington at Capacity for Kindergarten Enrollment

Superintendent says some students could be relocated to Southern Boulevard or Milton Avenue.

District of the Chathams Superintendent Michael LaSusa said Wednesday that kindergarten enrollment is "steady" and at capacity at the Washington Avenue School.

Two of the three schools that offer kindergarten in the District remain comfortable with allowing enrollees, while Washington Avenue School has reached its limit.

Similar to last year, enrollment at Washington has reached 100 students, with four sections of 25, and any further enrollees may be ‘allocated’ to different District schools.

“There’s a waiting list for WAS kindergarten (at the moment),” said LaSusa. “If more enroll, we’ll have to allocate them to other schools, in what’s convenient to them.”

Board member Al Burgunder asked if the families of the 100 current enrollees at Washington should be approached to see if other schools may be more suitable/convenient for them.

LaSusa responded by saying that a process like that is not the customary route. Instead, any further families who inquire about Washington will be asked to be relocated to the next most convenient locale.

Also, time still allows for openings within the current WAS roster, as school remains weeks away. In that case, slots may open for those determined to send their children to WAS.
