Schools Prepare For Potentially Major Storm

Morris County could get up to one foot of snow.

The latest National Weather Service forecast says Chatham could receive anywhere from eight to 12 inches of snow from Friday afternoon through late Saturday. And the School District of the Chathams is readying for the precipitation.

"As of now, we think we will squeeze in the events scheduled this weekend," Superintendent Jim O'Neill said in an e-mail earlier this afternoon.

Those events include Chatham Middle School's production of Beauty and the Beast, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday. O'Neill said the snow should start late enough for the Friday night play to go on as scheduled, and should taper off in enough time for the Saturday performance to be staged.

Saturday high school events are "a little more problematic," O'Neill said, but, as he put it, "will go as scheduled unless there is a bigger storm than we anticipate." Varsity girls' and boys' Morris County tournament basketball games scheduled to be played at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively, at Chatham High School would be moved to 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday if they are postponed.

Boys' and girls' junior varsity basketball games scheduled for Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively, would be postponed to Monday. Those games will also be played at Chatham High School.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Morris County. A mixture of rain and snow is expected to come into the area before 7 p.m. Friday before the snow begins to hit the area a bit harder on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The snow will likely continue throughout the day Saturday before tapering off at about 1 a.m. early Sunday morning.
