School Security System Coming This Year

Swipe card system expected for start of classes, with cameras to follow.

Improved security systems are expected to welcome students this fall in the , as they are currently being installed on the exterior and interior of all school buildings.

“This is the most significant capital improvement expenditure in the budget this past year,” Superintendent Michael LaSusa said at the BOE's meeting Monday night. “We’re in the process of putting into place about 200 security cameras and swipe card systems at all of our schools. All of the wiring has been done this summer. We’re on schedule to have the swipes in place by the time the school year begins and then the security cameras will follow.

School Board President Thomas Belding asked if signs and notices would be posted indicating video surveillance is in effect. LaSusa said he would look into it.

Impacts of PSE&G, Cell Phone Project on Student Parking

During public participation at the board meeting, a parent asked whether PSE&G construction taking place in the parking lot near the Colony would have any impact on student parking.

LaSusa said a temporary cell phone tower is going up on the gravel portion of the parking lot that belongs to PSE&G. The paved areas on both sides of the street are available for student parking, with the exception of the 30-foot area that will be taken up by the cell tower.

“The township has given us permission to paint lines in those two lots,” LaSusa said. “Once we do that, we’ll have a better feel for exactly the number of cars that will fit in the two areas.”

Board member Kim Cronin noted that the high school sent emails out to the parents of all juniors and seniors regarding where students can park.
