School Budget Up for Final Approval

The Finance Committee recommends a tax levy increase of 2.16 percent over 2011.

The will vote on sending the 2012-13 school budget to voters with a 2.16 tax levy increase over last year.

The increase includes $81,978 of banked cap available from the 2011-12 budget, which the board can use without requiring a second vote from the public.

At this incease, the annual household will see a monthy tax increase of $24.17 and an annual increase of $290.08. The average household will see taxes increase $9.45 each month and $113.43 over the year.

The budget also includes $914,907 in capital outlay, including $405,442 for additional equipment, $242,459 for construction and $267,006 for the capital reserve.

Equipment includes a carpet extractor for asbestos abatement, carpet removal and tile replacement for several classrooms at and (WAS), where the carpets "have definitely seen better days," LaSusa said.

Staff increases include a new college and career specialist position for to help seniors with their college applications.

The board will also vote on approving $20,968 for a 6-ft. path leading from the back of to Longwood Avenue. for the parking lot repavement and new classroom construction included $150,000 for change orders, and two previous change orders have totaled $149,465.

The board will also vote tonight on two resignations, one for Caitlin Swann, a Spanish teacher from , and Virginia Barnes, a kindergarten teacher from WAS.

Another item included in the budget is the termination of Joseph Marsigliano, a custodian at WAS, and the approval of an executive secretary at , Lenore Paulan, and Cheryl Granito as a home instructor for one student with disabilities.
