35 Chatham Teachers Attain Tenure

Superintendent thanked employees at school board meeting for their dedication.

The School District of the Chathams recently recognized 35 teachers who attained tenure this school year.

Superintendent Dr. Michael LaSusa invited the teachers to last week's Board of Education meeting to thank them collectively and to recognize their "incredible amount of work and effort and dedication on behalf of the students."

Teachers who attain tenure in the district are a select group, he said. Thousands of applications are reviewed and hundreds of interviews are conducted to identify the most talented teachers, and then those employees must stay with the district and show they are effective.

The 35 employees attained tenure after completing three years and one day of employment. For newer teachers, the time before attaining tenure is four years under a 2012 state law that overhauled the tenure system.
