New Vice Principals Make 'Enthusiastic' Additions

Educators from Jefferson and Long Hill will move into positions at Chatham High and Lafayette, respectively.

The Board of Education unanimously approved two new assistant principals at and in a single vote Monday.

The two newcomers are Douglas Walker and Marco Freyre, who will take the positions vacated by and , respectively.

According to Superintendent Michael LaSusa, both went through "the same process [as] we have with other appointments." This includes interviews with the school principals, Personnel head Debra Becker, himself, the school board's Personnel Committee and Search Committees, which included school board members, teachers and parents from both schools and their Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTOs).

Both received the unanimous endorsement of the school board's Personnel Committee, LaSusa said.

Walker currently works as the supervisor of Instructional Technology for grades kindergarten through 12 in the Jefferson Township Public Schools, where he has been for the past four years.

He earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 1998 and his Education Supervisor’s certificate in 2008 from William Paterson University of New Jersey. He also holds an MBA in business from Montclair State University in 2003.

"He's enthusiastic, and we know that there were some tears shed over the phone when we did the reference checks on him. They weren't too eager to have him leave," LaSusa said of Walker.

Freyre is a fifth-grade teacher at Millington School in Long Hill Township, where he has worked  for the past nine years in a variety of positions, including Dean of Students.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Northeastern University, earned in 2002 and a master’s degree in education administration from Kean University, earned in 2011. He told Chatham Patch he graduated from Kean with a 4.0 grade point average.
