Hurricane Pushes Back High School Parking Lot

Interim superintendent says lot will be finished within two weeks of school starting.

Dennis Fyffe, the interim superintendent of the School District of the Chathams, said Hurricane Irene has delayed the construction of the parking lot expansion at .

, but recent heavy rains and the hurricane have made that deadline impossible. "It'll be completed within a week or two of school starting," Fyffe said.

Paving was completed at the parking lot before the hurricane last weekend, complete with painting and speed bumps. A however, impedes access to the middle school.

Power at Other Schools

Hurricane Irene also , which did not open again until Tuesday, and athletic practices were canceled Monday out of safety concerns. Fyffe said some personnel were unable to travel Tuesday and continues to be without power.

"We're working with the [borough] and hopefully we'll be able to open on time," Fyffe said.

As of 4:08 p.m. Tuesday, 2,580 JCP&L customers in Chatham continue to be without power, according to the utility company's website.
