First Baseball Invitational This Weekend

Spring Cougar Weekend is here, and this year brings a new feature to the sports staple.

The first Chatham Baseball Invitational begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at the varsity and JV fields at Chatham High School. Chatham High will take on Bernards, and Mountain Lakes will play Summit. The next round of the invitational will be at 2 p.m. when the two winners will play each other and the two losers will play each other.

The inaugural Softball Invitational also begins at 10 a.m. with the Lady Cougars playing West Essex and Hillsborough playing Rutherford. The winners and losers of the first games will play each other at 2 p.m.

Parents will sell hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks so the whole family can spend the day cheering on the baseball team.

On Thursday:

• The girls golf team won their first match against Oak Knoll 224-244 Thursday at the Morris County Country Club. The Cougars were led by Katie Howard-Johnson, Nathalie Ivers, Katelyn Tufariello, Chelsea Flanigan, MinJee Kim and Caroline McCann.
• The boys lacrosse team defeated Ridge High 9-5 in a home game.
• The boys and girls baseball and softball had matching scores in their victories over Dover, both winning 10-0.
• The boys golf team defeated Bernards 163-183 at the Fairmount Country Club. The top scorers were Jim Campbell (43), Patrick Stock (41), Peter Marconi (40) and Ben Alcorn (39).
• The boys track team were victorious over Parsippany (96-44) and Pequannock (115-25) in Parsippany. Five athletes placed first: Andrew Mudgett in the high jump at 5'10"; Stephen Bangs in high hurdles at 15.7; Jake Neumann in the discus at 156'7; Ryan Worden in the pole vault at 9'; and Corey Black in both the 800 at 2:09 and 1600 at 4:38.
• The girls track team defeated Parsippany 71-66 in their meet but was defeated by Pequannock, 77-63.
• The girls lacrosse team defeated Millburn 23-13 in their away game.

Here are the games scheduled for this weekend.

Friday games are:

• boys varsity and JV baseball play against Madison High in away games at 4 p.m.;
• girls varsity and JV softball teams play against Madison at home at 4 p.m.;
• boys varsity tennis travels to Madison and the JV team takes on the Dodgers at home, both at 4 p.m.

On Saturday the following games are scheduled:

• The boys and girls varsity track teams will compete at the Morris Hills Relays at Morris Hills High School at 9 a.m. Transport leaves from Cougar Field at 7:30 p.m.
• The Chatham Invitational begins at 10 a.m. and continues at 2 p.m. and includes Chatham High, Summit High, Mountain Lakes High and Bernards High.
• The girls varsity and JV lacrosse teams take on Manhasset Jr./Sr. High School at 11 a.m. Transport leaves from the high school at 8 a.m.
• The boys varsity lacrosse team will travel to Haverford, Penn. to take on Fairfield Prep at the Haverford School at 3 p.m. Transport leaves from Cougar Field at noon.
