Native Species Plant Tour of Wildlife Habitat

Tour of the  Native Wildlife Habitat/stormwater retention basin adjacent to the Southern Blvd School parking lot at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday August 12th. Matt Palmer, Ph.D., professor of Biology at Colombia University, and member of the Chatham Twp Environmental Commission, will show us the native and invasive plant life and the fauna that the habitat supports.   All are welcome to arrive before the tour to help high school students mulch and pull invasive species from 4 to 6 p.m.

The habitat was started in 2005 through a grant from the Natural Resource Conservation Service. High School student Sophie Kapica is in the process of certifying it as a Monarch Butterfly Way Station.  If Chatham Township officials and Southern Blvd School teachers and PTO are active with the habitat, the Township can also receive Sustainable Jersey Points for the habitat/retention basin as a demonstration "rain garden."

Naturalists, gardeners, teachers and all are welcome!
