The Chatham Township Environmental Committee (CTEC) and the Chatham Borough Green Initiatives Committee (CBGI) together are hosting a Water Conservation Event at Chatham Library, 7:30 pm Thursday February 2nd. As part of their joint Eco Film and Discussion Series this event is geared towards helping community members save water on an individual level in their homes and garden.

The meeting will feature guest speaker Ms Stephanie Queirolo, a discussion panel composed of community environmental leaders and short informational films.

Ms Queirolo is a Watershed Ambassador for AmeriCorps New Jersey, and as part of her presentation she will share ideas on conserving water at home. She will also explain how easy-to-install devices around the home, such as faucet aerators and misting shower-heads, promote economic water use.

Members of the Town & Country Garden Club and the Green Committee of Stanley Congregational Church UCC will join Hazel England, Great Swamp Watershed Association’s Director of Education and Outreach, on a rain garden discussion panel.

Rain gardens use native plants to capture water run-off from snow melt or rainfall and keep pollutants from entering fresh-water reserves. They are also an effective means of saving water outdoors.

Rain barrels are another means of reducing run-off pollution, conserving water and protecting our drinking water.  Rain barrels utilize natural water resources to care for lawns and gardens by collecting rain fall for outdoors use in dry spells. A sample rain barrel will be on display on Thursday, along with information about how to use it most effectively.

The CTEC will also show short films that explain outdoors water management. By reducing run-off to maximize water use, or planting rain gardens, an individual can save water and cut down on water bills.

This Water Conservation Event will be held at the Library of The Chathams, 7:30pm Thursday 2nd February. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. For more information contact CTEC at ctec@chathamtownship.org
