Errors Found in DOE School Report Card

The annual report from the state shows significant errors in Chatham and other districts, superintendent says.

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe said the administration of the noticed errors in the released Thursday, May 31.

Two significant errors were spotted, Fyffe said, including a misreporting of the percentage of senior students who took the SATs. According to The College Board, Fyffe said, 93 percent of the class of 2011 took the SATs.

"That's pretty standard for us," Fyffe said. "We're confident that number is accurate. Unfortunately the New Jersey State Report Card which is now out says that number is 78 percent. It's clearly wrong."

The report card also states 100 percent of juniors and seniors from the 2010-11 school year took Advanced Placement tests. Fyffe said The College Board puts the percentage closer to 67.

The 100 percent listed on the state report card, Fyffe said, "is clearly incorrect," and other districts also show the same error.

Administrators will examine the report card closely to search for any other errors.

Fyffe became aware of errors in other districts' report cards at a conference he attended with Acting Commissioner of Education Chris Cerf, at which another superintedent pointed out errors on his district's report card, Fyffe said.

"Unfortunately we have discovered similar errors," Fyffe said, as have other districts.

Fyffe said he has alerted Executive County Superintendent Kathleen Serafino, who has alerted the state.
