English Supervisor Alexis to Be Named Assistant High School Principal

George Alexis teaches AP English Language and Composition at Chatham High.

UPDATED: 9:43 a.m. Chatham High School English supervisor and teacher George Alexis will be appointed the school's assistant principal by the School District of the Chathams' Board of Education Monday night.

According to the board's agenda, Alexis will officially step into the position July 1 and will make $123,235 per year.

Alexis's staff page on the Chatham High School Web site says he is an English supervisor at the high school. The site also says he teaches AP English Language and Composition.

Once he assumes his new role, Alexis will essentially be filling a newly created position in the high school. Current high school co-Principal Michael LaSusa will take the reins next year as the district's assistant superintendent when he replaces retiring Assistant Superintendent Anne Dudley.

Fellow co-Principal Darren Groh will remain as the school's principal, but the district has decided that Chatham High School will no longer have co-principals after this year. Instead, it will have one principal and two assistant principals.

Alexis will join incumbent Assistant Principal Lori Gironda as the high school's second assistant head.

Superintendent Jim O'Neill said in an email that Alexis came to the district five years ago after making a career change from law to teaching. He has been English supervisor since he became a district employee.

He called Alexis an "outstanding educator."

"He emerged from dozens of candidates as the one recommended to complete our high school administrative staff," O'Neill said.

The superintendent said Alexis's departure leaves the English supervisor position open, and the district will look to fill that slot before school begins in September.
