A public hearing on the budget is scheduled tonight.

The School District of the Chathams is considering imposing a $150 fee on students looking to participate in extracurricular activities, according to a report in the Daily Record.

According to the report, the district also plans to cut classroom aide positions in an effort to bring the tax levy increase down to 7 percent. It will discuss those matters tonight at a public hearing on the budget at 7:30 p.m. at Township Hall.

The district had originally planned to increase its tax levy by 8.9 percent, and the budget it adopted at a meeting last week contained that increase. That would have meant an average 3.4 percent tax increase for borough residents. Township residents would have seen their taxes go up an average of 2.6 percent.

It had also planned to find additional money to keep the kindergarten day intact. An original plan would have cut the kindergarten day down by 20 minutes.
