Chatham Takes It to the Hoop in Win Over Parsippany

Lady Cougars, stymied by lack of three-point shooting opportunities, rely on inside game to oust Red Hawks.

PARSIPPANY — The Chatham Lady Cougars basketball team started slow but came on strong to defeat Parsippany, 52-37, on Tuesday night at Parsippany High School.

The Parsippany defense keyed on the perimeter—more specifically, on sophomore shooting guard Amanda Berntsen—which caused Chatham to struggle in the first quarter. The team was held to eight points.

With the perimeter securely locked down, Chatham began the second quarter by taking their game to the interior.

Forward Kelsey Hart led the Lady Cougars inside, putting up 22 points and eight rebounds.

From that point on, the Lady Cougars' inside presence was too much for Parsippany to handle. Forward Caroline Murphy totaled eight rebounds as Chatham finished the half with a 25-20 lead.

Chatham showed much of the same dominance in the second half. The Lady Cougars' defense held Parsippany to just six points in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Chatham ran away with the game as it scored from all parts of the court and left Parsippany to wonder what happened to their first quarter dominance.

Ashley Burroughs and Aysun Malta led the Red Hawks with nine and eight points, respectively.

Chatham improved to 5-3 with the win. Parsippany dropped to 5-4.

The Lady Cougars will face Madison at home Thursday at 7pm.
