Chatham BOE Meets on Eve of School Elections

Board will hear a report on the 2012-13 school year budget before residents go to vote. The meeting will take place at Chatham Middle School.

The holds one final meeting before Chathamites head to the polls Tuesday to vote on the school budget.

The budget, as approved by the board, includes a 2.30 percent tax levy increase for and residents. The increase means an additional $307.34 for borough residents, or $25.61 per month, and $121.71 each year, or $10.14 each month, for township residents.

Funds over the two percent tax levy cap will be drawn from the district's capped banking from past years. By not taxing the maximum allowable levy increase from year to year, the district can draw on those funds in years when they do not have as many exceptions from the cap.

The district can get exceptions from uncontrollable expenses, such as increased enrollment or rising health care and pension costs.

Chatham residents must approve the budget in a public vote Tuesday. Since the borough and township districts merged in 1988, the public has never failed a school budget.
