BOE Holds Public Hearing on School Budget

More hearings to follow before Election Day on April 17.

The holds a public hearing unveiling the 2012-13 school budget Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Included in the budget is an additional sum of $429,000 in aid from the state this year, bringing the total of state aid to $1,871,941.

Peter Daquila, the business administrator for the district, said "the additional funds should allow the district to maintain and potentially expand the services offered to the students."

Among the programs Principal Darren Groh wants to expand is the Chinese program, which is currently in its second year at Chatham High and . Groh wants to offer a third year of Chinese in the 2012-13 school year.

Science electives will be expanded to include an astronomy class and a class in anatomy and physiology.

Groh also proposed a partnership with Rutgers University for the second year. The proposal to offer dual credits for Chatham High students who take classes at Rutgers was approved by the board for the 2011-12 school year, but the course was canceled "due to low enrollment," Groh said.

Other Business

The regular meeting of the BOE meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

Among the items on the agenda is a resolution to approve the resignation of Kristin Kosky, the assistant business administrator for the district.

The BOE will also vote on an item setting the poll locations and timelines, notice postings, drawing of positions on the ballot and the public hearing date for the April 2012 school elections.

Elections will be Tuesday, April 17. If approved as currently drafted, elections will be held between 2 and 9 p.m. at Chatham Middle School upper gym for borough residents and Gym C at Chatham High for township residents.

The Board of Education meeting and public budget hearing will be held at the Monday evening.
