After-School Activities for SBS Up for BOE Vote

Enrichment courses by the PTO include mythology, ceramics, cooking and theater.

The Board of Education for the School District of the Chathams will vote on whether to approve a program of over 20 enrichment courses at .

The courses are provided courtesy of the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and are meant to supplement the school's existing curriculum. Courses last for between 4 to 9 weeks and may cost anywhere from $100 to $140 (with the shorter classes costing less,) according to Dorothy Lee of the PTO.

Most classes are taught by teachers from SBS, while others are provided by external programs or teachers from other schools or districts.

  • Jewelry Making
  • Once Upon A Time (for kindergarteners and first graders)
  • Mad Science Marvels (for kindergarteners and first graders) and Mad Science NASA (for second and third graders)
  • Chess (for first through third graders)
  • Zumba (for second and third graders)
  • Sports Sampler (for kindergarteners and first graders)
  • Legos
  • Introduction to Cooking, Advanced Cooking and Fun with Food
  • Elementary Egypt and Advanced Egypt
  • Pottery
  • Taekwondo
  • Little Money KPM and AMK
  • Sports for Girls
  • Magic
  • Snakes and Scales
  • Legos and Lego Robotics
  • Mythology
  • Color Me Mine Ceramics
  • Rock Climbing

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe will provide the board with an update on facilities improvements in the district. The parking lot expansion and four-classroom addition at have been delayed because of rain.

Also, 21 teachers seek to change their status in the Association of Chatham Teachers and Secretaries (ACTS) Certified Staff Salary Guide for 2011-12. The status changes are mostly due to increased years of teaching experience and advanced degrees.
