Additional School Aid May Replace LAS Boiler

The Board of Education will vote on how to use the funds at Monday's regular meeting.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams will vote Monday on whether to use $250,000 of to replace the boiler at Lafayette Avenue School.

Board President Tom Belding said Lafayette Avenue School has two boilers, the oldest of which was more than 20 years old in his estimation. He said the board has concerns about the boiler cracking, malfunctioning or not having available parts for repairs.

"We’ve had professionals look at it on a couple of occasions," Belding said. "[The boiler] is a high ticket item which had actually been on our long range facility plan. ... We feel this is an appropriate assessment [for the funds]."

, but the board did not alter the 2011-12 budget to include the money, partly because the fiscal year began on July 1 and an updated budget was due by July 19 to use the money this year.

At the time Matthew Gilfillan, the head of the Facilities and Finance Committee, felt it was not enough time to submit a new budget. Gilfillan also said there was no guarantee of how much state aid the district would receive for the 2012-13 academic year, and reserving the money for that budget was "in our best interest."

If the motion to use $250,000 towards a new boiler is approved, the remaining balance—a further $267,000—will remain in reserve, according to Belding. "We have not decided what we want to use that other money for, but we know that the $250,000 makes sense in this situation."
