Tuesday is Registration Deadline for Special Election

This is the last day to register with your local clerk or at the county clerk's office.

Tuesday is the last day to register for the primary election to fill Sen. Frank Lautenberg's seat.

Borough residents who will be over 18 by the Aug. 13 primary can register to vote at the Chatham Borough Clerk's Office, open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the Morris County Clerk's Office. 

Township residents who will be 18 by the primary election can register at the Chatham Township Clerk's Office or at the Morris County Clerk's Office.

Borough voters in districts 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 will vote at different polling places than their usual spots since public schools are unavailable over the summer.
For borough voters, the polling places are as follows:

  • Districts 1, 2 and 3 will vote at the Chatham Borough Firehouse at Firehouse Plaza and South Passaic Avenue. Usually only District 2 residents vote at the firehouse; Districts 1 and 3 usually vote at Milton Avenue School.
  • Districts 4, 6, 8 and 9 will vote at the Chatham United Methodist Church on Main Street, where usually only Districts 4 and 9 vote. District 6 and 8 residents usually vote at the ECLC School.
  • Districts 5 and 7 residents will vote at the lobby of Chatham Middle School on Main Street. Usually those residents vote at Washington Avenue School.
Township residents will keep their usual polling places, which are:
  • District 1: Green Village Fire House
  • Districts 2 and 4: Long Hill Chapel
  • Districts 3 and 5: Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church
  • District 6: Senior Center of the Chathams
  • District 7: Chatham Township Municipal Building
  • Districts 8 and 9: River Road Fire House
  • District 10: Briarwood Coachlight Clubhouse
All polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 13. The regular election will take place Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The election is the special primary for the U.S. Senate seat which was vacated when Sen. Frank Lautenberg died June 3.
