Township to Vote on Shunpike Sidewalk Grant

The state Department of Transportation is offering the grant.

The Chatham Township Committee will vote on a resolution to apply for a grant to construct a sidewalk on a portion of Shunpike Road.

The resolution does not specify the amount of money available from the grant, but the sidewalk will go from Southern Boulevard to Shunpike Field.

The committee will also vote on a resolution to move $162,506.60 into their budget when they meet Thursday night. The money was earmarked for the , a .

The county has jurisdiction over a signifiant portion of the road, and the $162,506.60 covers the county's share of the project.

Another resolution up for approval is for the township to apply for a grant from the state Department of Transportation for the River Road improvements.

Ruschke estimated the project would take between three and four weeks, plus approximately two additional weeks for Top Line Construction to provide the requisite documentation, sign the contract and mobilize the equipment before they begin work. Two inches of pavement from the affected area will be torn up and 2 inches of new pavement will be laid in again, Ruschke said.

"We're not shutting down the road. We'll always have one lane of traffic going through," Ruschke said. He also stated construction will take place during the day and not at night.
