Township Looks at Crosswalk Near Country Store

Final decision on community garden also expected to come out of Thursday's meeting.

The Chatham Township Committee will discuss putting in a crosswalk across Fairmount Avenue at the intersection with Meyersville Road, right in front of the Fairmount Country Store, when they meet Thursday.

Committeeman Kathy Abbott, who also serves as the chair of the Safe Routes to School Committee, said the road "is the hub of activity between the municipal building [and] playground and the Country Store and Esternay Field." There is also a bus stop near the intersection, and the store is a popular destination for children after school.

Most of Fairmount Avenue in the township is a county road, but the portion from Meyersville Road to River Road is owned by the township. That stretch is being repaved as part of the 2013 microsurfacing program, and Abbott said "while we are paving the road, we can add the crosswalk and ramps at Meyersville/Fairmount intersection at little cost."

Abbott first brought up the possibility of adding a crosswalk at that intersection at the committee's June meeting, and Engineer John Ruschke said he would look into it.

Also on the agenda as a discussion item is an update on the proposal to put a Community Garden at Woodland Park. Borough Mayor Bruce Harris and Township Mayor Nicole Hagner have been in discussions about the garden for several weeks, and Harris said he hopes to hear a final decision from the township committee after their Wednesday meeting.
