Sidewalk Ordinance Up for Final Approval

The ordinance would consolidate existing sidewalk laws into a single code.

The Chatham Borough Council will vote on an ordinance consolidating all existing sidewalk laws into a single ordinance when they meet Monday.

The ordinance has already passed a first reading and is now up for public hearing and final adoption.

It includes the rules for sidewalk dining for commercial businesses, orders the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks within the first 12 hours of daylight after a snowfall and outlines the rules for removal of encumbrances.

The ordinance also dictates that bicycles, skateboards, scooters and skates are not permitted upon sidewalks in the central business district.

The council will also hear an update on the development of a new potential community garden at Woodland Park. Because Woodland Park is in both township and borough boundaries, governing bodies of both towns must agree to install the garden.

Chatham Township officials have expressed favor for the garden, but not to help pay for it.

The Chatham Borough Council meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday. A full copy of the agenda is attached to this article, along with a full copy of the sidewalk ordinance.
