Shunpike Opening Delayed to Oct. 1

At least, committee members hope.

When the Chatham Township Committee met Thursday night, members reminded Adminstrator Tom Ciccarone of his last report on construction at Shunpike Field.

"I know I said at our last meeting that it would be done by this meeting," Ciccarone said with a smile.

Ciccarone did not know at that Aug. 18 meeting that an earthquake, a hurricane and near a week of rain would prevent Fredco from completing the project.

"The weather isn't cooperating," Hagner said. "We weren't able to complete the remainder of the work."

According to Committee Member Bill O'Connor, there is one field which needs sodding and a few other small tasks are outstanding.

Ciccarone said the contractor is already starting to demobilize from the site.

The opening ceremony for Shunpike Field were previously scheduled for Sept. 10, but Mayor Nicole Hagner announced the tentative plans to move the ceremony to Saturday, Oct. 1.
