Shunpike Field to Open in September

Township officials say that the project should be completed within two weeks.

Chatham Township Engineer John Ruschke said Thursday the renovations to are nearly completed.

"We've been almost done since May, but now we're almost almost done," Ruschke said, referring jokingly to the .

"This week with the rain has certainly not been helpful," Ruschke said, but the contractor "is getting towards the end."

Mayor Nicole Hagner said anyone who drives past the field can see a substantial portion of the field is laid out and she hopes the contractor, Fredco Landscaping, will begin moving their equipment off the field soon.

"My expectation is that it shouldn't be more than two weeks worth of work," Ruschke said. Hagner countered, saying, "It shouldn't have been more than two weeks, like, four weeks ago."

Administrator Tom Ciccarone said some cosmetic work around the edge of the field still remains, including laying cement for the pathways and repairing the driveway. "It will be done before your next meeting," Ciccarone said.

Ruschke said a tentative opening day is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10. Sports teams have been playing on the field since summer.

Fredco has not responded to Chatham Patch for requests for comments.
