No ESL Teacher Needed in Chatham, LaSusa Says

The Board of Education had previously approved a part-time ESL teacher, but the administration no longer thinks it is required.

The Board of Education will not seek to hire a part-time English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, according to a discussion among board members Monday.

Rich Connors, the chair of the Personnel Committee, said during his committee report that the board was looking to hire a part-time teacher to teach ESL.

Assistant Superintendent Michael LaSusa said that the board approved the part-time ESL teacher in June. "We now think that we do not need that person after all," LaSusa said.

The position will be put on hold until the administration sees demonstrable need. "We're not going to hire that person [until] the need is there.

Connors said that at , but the administration hesitated to say that it is currently necessary. Should first grade enrollment spike at Southern Boulevard between now and the end of registration, Connors said that the materials and classroom are available and resumes for the position have already been received, even though the position has not been advertised.

The committee and administration are also currently looking for a part-time orchestra teacher in the district, Connors said.

Board Member Lata Kenney said that the Chatham Education Foundation scheduled the Taste of Chatham fundraiser for Monday, Oct. 24.

Taste of Chatham is one of the biggest fundraisers that the Chatham Education Foundation does each year. Over 300 people attended the 2010 event, which featured culinary fare from numerous Chatham restaurants.

Taste of Chatham will take place at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park.
