Letter to the Editor: Ali and Abbott for Council

Township resident writes in to encourage residents this Election Day.

To the Editor:

Next Tuesday, June 7th, is Primary Election Day. It’s important that Chatham Township residents vote on Tuesday.

There are 4 Republican candidates for 2 open Township Committee seats. There are no Democratic candidates. As a result, this primary is a critical step in determining who will make decisions for our town in the near future.

When you go to the polls on Tuesday, I strongly encourage voters to support Laura Ali Nonnenmacher and Kathy Abbott for Township Committee.

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Laura Ali Nonnenmacher over the past few years through our PTO work and other volunteer initiatives. I’ve always been amazed by her enthusiasm, her ability to inspire participation and her “let’s get it done” approach to things that others might find daunting. In her role as PTO President, she consistently went out of her way to ensure parents were informed and involved. Initiatives like launching webcasts of PTO meetings and the introduction of evening meetings went a long way in engaging community members who otherwise felt disenfranchised.

And once she had your attention, she was straightforward with her message and she was open to comments and input. It is this openness and transparency in communication that I think will be one of her many great contributions to the Township Committee.

In addition to her wonderful communications skills, I have also had the pleasure of witnessing an amazing combination of compassion and determination that time and again has had a profound impact on our community. As our community dealt with the loss of some of our treasured members, Laura was at the forefront providing care, coordinating support and running fundraisers to help those that were impacted.

There was no hesitation. She knew what to do, she rallied the community and she made a difference. She has similarly applied herself to her many volunteer roles, looking for creative solutions to problems, drawing on the community to help where needed and getting the job done. She does this all while managing her 3 children and her business.

Kathy Abbott also impresses with her ability to get things done. I’ve known Kathy Abbott through school volunteer work and through her environmental work in the community. She too is a creative thinker and she does an amazing amount of research and due diligence when evaluating an issue or concern. She led our schools and community in our efforts to “go green” and was instrumental in advancing environmental stewardship as a core shared value in our community.

I hope you will vote in the primary election on June 7th and. when you do, please consider casting your two (2) Township Committee votes for Laura Ali Nonnenmacher and Kathy Abbott.

Thanks so much for your time and consideration.
