Irene: Five Residences Evacuated During Storm

Chatham mayors begin to assess damage.

Four township apartments and one borough home were evacuated as a result of damage during Hurricane Irene, mayors said Monday.

Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said she knew of only the four apartments in the Cardinal Hill complex on River Road that needed evacuating after a tree fell and damaged the units around midnight Sunday morning.

"Those are the only ones I know of," Hagner said.

In the borough, one family on Highland Avenue left their home Sunday morning after a tree collapsed on top of the house. Mayor Nelson Vaughan said that though other homes were struck by trees, he did not know of any other homes which needed to be evacuated.

Local officials started assessing the damage to town caused by Hurricane Irene.

"The Public Works is out trying to clear out some trees and clear the roads out," Hagner said. A full assessment will be complete later this week, she said.

Hagner and Nelson Vaughan, the mayor of Chatham Borough, said the two towns will apply for FEMA funds to help pay for the clean-up.

Both municipalities will open their respective mulch areas for residents to bring fallen branches and leaves from their yards.

The Chatham Borough Mulch Area is located on Duchamp Avenue and will be open each day this week from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Chatham Township Much Area on Tanglewood Lane will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

sent an alert Monday afternoon that is closed until further notice. Hagner said there was at least one large tree down at the pool.
