Interim Super to Report on Enrollment, Facilities

The Board of Education meets after the first day of school Tuesday.

Dennis Fyffe will report on the state of facilities and enrollment in the School District of the Chathams Tuesday evening when the Board of Education meets.

Demographers reports tend to be conservative. Enrollment in the 2009-10 school year was about 450 students higher than predicted in the last demographer's report, and many schools were at capacity in the 2010-11 year.

To prepare for the spike in enrollment, the district converted three classrooms within the building and three more at . They also started construction of four new classrooms at the high school and began to expand the parking lot, though recent rains have delayed the project.

The board will also vote on whether to approve resignations of five non-certified staff members, including four special education teachers: Beth Maratea at Chatham High, Kathy Yeakel and Kristy Keane at the middle school and Scarlett Specht at Milton Avenue School. The resignations are all effective before Tuesday.

Coaches for winter sports at Chatham High School are also up for approval. Harvey Cohen, who will resign as the athletic director at Chatham High School effective Dec. 31, is slated to return as the head coach of the ice hockey team, pending the board's approval.

The Board of Education meets Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Chatham Township Municipal Building.
