Herbert to Run for Congress

Borough resident, who previously ran for Assembly, hopes to unseat Frelinghuysen.

Borough resident Douglas Herbert announced during a Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams fundraiser breakfast on Saturday at Charlie Brown's Steakhouse that he will run for Congress in the fall on the Democratic ticket.

Herbert, an attorney, ran for state Assembly last year and lost but is giving another run at elected office in 2010. He will attempt to replace Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-Harding, who has been in office since 1995.

Herbert will formalize his announcement later in the week. But at the breakfast, he said he wanted to first announce his planned candidacy amongst friends. In order to run, Herbert must file a petition with 200 signatures, and people were signing that petition in his support as they left Charlie Brown's.

He noted that both borough and township residents were present.

"This is the only race where we get to work together," he said. The township and the borough have different state assemblymen and senators, but New Jersey's 11th congressional district encompasses both.

Herbert made the announcement after former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio spoke at the event.
