Former Twp. Mayor Resigns from Committee

Kevin Tubbs' letter of resignation was submitted Friday.

Committee Member Kevin Tubbs will officially resign his elected position Tuesday.

Tubbs submitted his letter of resignation to Township Mayor Nicole Hagner Friday afternoon. The resignation is effective Tuesday.

"Regrettably, I will no longer be able to fulfill my obligations as [an] elected member of the Township Committee of the Township of Chatham. Therefore, I will be resigning my position," Tubbs wrote in the letter.

The Chatham Township Republican Committee will meet on Monday, May 21, to select three nominees to serve out the remainder of Tubbs' term, which expires Dec. 31.

The resignation was expected, as Tubbs  from the township committee, as his family was planning to move out of state.

Thomas R. Basta, the chair of the Chatham Township Republican Committee, told Chatham Patch in an email, "While I completely understand his reasons, Kevin's departure is blow to the Township. He was a tireless advocate for lean, effective government and knew no enemies. It's tough to replace a guy like that."

Tubbs is currently in the last year of his second three-year term. He was elected in 2006 and 2009. He served as mayor for three years after he was selected to fill John Demeo's seat on the committee in 2005. .

Serving on the committee, Tubbs wrote, "has been a pleasure and privilege." He also said it was "an honor" and "truly a blessing" to have been elected twice to sit on the committee and to serve as mayor for three years.
