Electronics, Hazmat Recycling Scheduled for Tomorrow

This is the first time the event will be held at Chatham High School.

What to do, what to do with that dusty computer, sitting in your basement, ragged from lack of use?

If you're in Chatham on Saturday, have no worries. Morris County is hosting a hazmat and electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Chatham High School, which will allow people to safely dispose of such items.

This is the first time the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority is holding such an event at Chatham High. It is open to all Morris County residents. There are four similar events throughout the county during the year.

The Chatham Township Environmental Commission has sponsored its own similar event in the past, but is not involved in this particular one. The county has a permit to dispose of hazardous materials, and such a permit is not often granted to local municipalities.

County electronics recycling events have often been held at locations relatively far from Chatham—one is at Lake Hopatcong this November.

"As a convenience to our residents, the mayor and the township committee had decided to contact the county," Environmental Commission member Patricia Collington said.

Now, officials are hoping that having the event nearby makes it easier for Morris County residents living nearby to properly dispose of their hazardous materials.

It costs money to dispose of some items, and information on fees can be found here.

Collington noted that people can also consider donating their used electronics, and it's possible to trade in some electronics at stores such as Best Buy or Staples for cash. There are also various recycling drop-off programs throughout the area.
