Cougar Field Lights Hearing Scheduled for Sept. 1

Assistant Superintendent Michael LaSusa said that the Madison Zoning Board has scheduled a haering to discuss the lights at Cougar Field.

The Madison Zoning Board will hold a hearing on the matter of installing lights at on Sept. 1, Dr. Michael LaSusa said Monday.

LaSusa, the assistant superintendent of the School District of the Chathams, said that the meeting on Sept. 1 "is scheduled solely to hear this case."

The board held a hearing on July 7, when Zoning Officer Frank Russo was questioned by attorneys representing the Chatham Board of Education regarding his decision to deny a zoning permit application to put lights on Chatham's Cougar Field.

Morris County Superior Court Judge W. Hunt Dumont ruled in April that the three towns which have land on Cougar Field – Chatham Borough, Chatham Township and Madison Borough – should be able to review the proposal for lights at Cougar Field, but stopped short of saying that the lights could not be installed.

The property Cougar Field sits on spans all three municipalities, but the field itself sits solely on Chatham Township property.

School Projects

LaSusa also said that several improvement projects to school facilities are currently underway, including a partial roof replacement at and a renovation to create three new classrooms at .

The district is still in discussion with Chatham Township officials regarding the proposed parking lot expansion and classroom additions at , following the board's unanimous vote to approve the project in June.
