Construction at Shunpike Field Progressing

Township engineer John Ruschke is investigating different types of fill to see which one is most appropriate for the field.

Construction at Shunpike Field is steadily progressing, officials said at a Township Committee meeting Thursday.

Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said construction has started, and said Township Engineer John Ruschke is reviewing different types of fill material for the site to ensure that the right material is selected.

"He wants to make sure the fill is good so there is a good base," Deputy Mayor Kevin Tubbs said.

Castle Park, which is adjacent to the field, is going to be open on an intermittent basis, according to Township Administrator Thomas Ciccarone. It will also be open on weekends.

Township officials said they will hopefully have a final candidate selected to be the borough and township's new recreation director by the Township Committee's next meeting on May 13.

The Chatham Township Environmental Commission also gave its annual report to the committee. It is working toward achieving a higher level of Sustainable Jersey certification—a certification it already received in November—and recently received a $5,000 grant from New Jersey American Water to advance Education and Outreach Committee programs.
