Compost Delivered to Community Garden

Mulch will prepare soil for spring gardening.

Green Path Organic Landcare and the borough's Department of Public Works transferred and delivered 60 cubic yards of compost to Chatham's new community garden Monday morning.

Community Gardens Coordinator Marcy Wecker said the dark surface of the compost will attract the heat of the sun. That will, in turn, heat up the garden plot area, which will prepare the soil for spring gardening.

The garden, which will located on PSE&G land at the corner of Main Street and Division Avenue, will feature 20 plots. They are each 10 x 20 feet and have good access to water. They are in full view of the sun, and a fence will surround each.

Wecker also said that Coviello Landscape Service owner Pete Coviello and his employees used a small bulldozer to evenly spread the 60 cubic yards of mulch over the garden growing area at an average depth of three inches.

Coviello is donating its time and labor to the community garden effort. So is Green Path.
