Chathamites Vote for Booker, Lonegan in Special Election Primary

The two also won their parties' nominations throughout the state of New Jersey.

Chatham residents were of the same mind as their fellow Garden State residents when they went to the polls Tuesday.

Steven M. Lonegan won the GOP primary in Chatham Borough and Chatham Township, as he did in other districts throughout New Jersey to become the Republican candidate to fill Frank Lautenberg's seat in the US Senate.

Democrats in Chatham Borough and Chatham Township voted overwhelmingly for Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who also took his party's nomination throughout New Jersey.

Democrats made an especially strong turnout, casting 298 votes in the borough to the 182 cast by Republicans, and 312 votes in the township compared to 303 Republican votes cast. Booker received 160 votes in Chatham Borough, compared to Lonegan's 139; in the township he received 198 votes to Lonegan's 253.

Overall turnout in both the borough and the township was extremely low, far less than 10 percent.

The ballots released Tuesday evening do not include mail-in ballots or in-person ballots which were cast at the Morris County Clerk's Office. Those results will be released later this week.

Booker and Lonegan will face off in a special election on Oct. 16.
