Chatham Mayors Postpone Halloween to Saturday

Safety tips for trick-or-treating post-Sandy included in a joint statement from the mayors.

Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce Harris and Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner released a joint statement Sunday officially postponing Halloween observations to Saturday, Nov. 10.

The decision was made, the mayors said, "due to the amount of debris and downed wires remaining on the streets and roads of the Chathams."

Home-to-home trick-or-treating should take place between 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday, during the daylight hours because of the continued danger posed by downed wires and sidewalks blocked by debris from the storm, such as tree limbs and bulk items from damaged homes.

The mayors also advice parents to accompany children as they go trick-or-treating for the same reasons, and trick-or-treaters to avoid walking along streets without sidewalks.

Downed wires can still be found throughout the two towns. Hagner and Harris warned in their statement all wires should be considered energized and pedestrians should not approach them.

Other safety tips from the mayors include:

  • Do not approach or drive over a downed wire and do not touch anything which might be in contact with downed wires.
  • Wear reflective clothing
  • Stay on the shoulder or as close to the shoulder as possible.

Parents should be reminded that areas in both communities are without power and that should be taken into consideration when choosing an area to walk.

Most of your points are quite valid. Hard to believe you know no one who has power. Did you just move here recently? My car gets 30 MPG. How many miles away do you live that prevents you from driving because of gas concerns? It must be at least 50 miles from home to school.

I personally do not like the idea of rescheduling Halloween during that time. 1. A lot of families are going away for vacation over this time. Kids who are going on vacation will miss Halloween. 2. There are too many down wires to reschedule Halloween this week

Does anyone know if the shops in downtown Chatham will have trick-or-treating on Saturday? Thanks in advance...
