Chatham Borough's Recycling Pick-Up Day Changes in January

Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority will provide curbside recycling collection in Chatham for first time since 1993.

A new recycling hauler for Chatham Borough in 2014 means a new curbside pick-up day for residents, as well as some changes in acceptable items.

Starting Jan. 3, curbside recycling collection will be every Friday.

The start of a contract with the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority also means hard cover books, metal pots and pans, and plastic items coded #3 and #6 are no longer accepted.

The borough contracted with the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority because the arrangement offers comparable service while saving Chatham money, according to a resolution authorizing the agreement.

Kathleen Hourihan, district recycling coordinator with the MCMUA, which operates the curbside recycling program in 15 other communities, said in a news release the MCMUA is pleased to begin providing recycling collection once again for the residents of Chatham Borough. The MCMUA last provided recycling collection to the borough in 1993.

The borough’s recyclable material will be delivered to ReCommunity Morris, a recycling facility in Mine Hill.

Shredded paper must be in a clear or translucent tied bag.

Clean aluminum foil, pie plates and trays, paper frozen food boxes, as well as plastic bottles and non-bottle plastics coded with #1 PETE, #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE, #5PP, and #7 OTHER continue to be acceptable recyclables, along with paper, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, junk mail, magazines and newspapers.

Bulky plastics and electronics can be recycled weekly at the borough’s recycling depot at 99 Summit Ave.

Mayor Bruce Harris said more information about the recycling schedule and material preparation guidelines can be found in the borough’s calendar, which will distributed to homes at the end of December.

More information about the recycling program is on the borough website, www.chathamborough.org.
