Chatham Borough Farmer's Market Committee Revs Up Operations, Seeks Volunteers

Group will hold an open house on Thursday.

The Chatham Borough Farmer's Market Committee is gearing up for its 2010 season, which begins June 26 and will continue until November 20. This year, the season has been extended for longer than ever.

The committee is holding an open house on Thursday in Borough Hall at 7:30 p.m. The committee will provide visitors information on the Farmer's Market, and refreshments will be served.

"You will learn how this wonderful market started from a seed of an idea to become a  flourishing market of Jersey Fresh seasonal delights," a flyer for the event reads. "Our market is part of the national movement 'Know Your Farmer; Know Your Food' that enables farmers to sell $1.2 billion of locally grown food directly to consumers in community markets."

"Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" is a U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative that encourages people to connect with local food producers.

The committee is seeking volunteer community activists to work to encourage people "to consume quality, source-verified food products." Information for prospective volunteers will be available at the open house.
